Background of the Study

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by high blood glucose levels due to insulin resistance or insufficient insulin production. Proper dietary management is essential for controlling diabetes, preventing complications, and improving the quality of life for affected individuals. A balanced diet rich in fiber, lean proteins, and healthy fats, along with controlled carbohydrate intake, is crucial in managing blood sugar levels.

In Kogi State, dietary habits among diabetic patients vary based on cultural preferences, economic factors, and health awareness. Many individuals may consume diets high in processed foods, refined carbohydrates, and unhealthy fats, exacerbating diabetes-related complications. Assessing the dietary habits of diabetic patients in Kogi State is necessary to identify nutritional gaps and recommend healthier eating patterns for better disease management.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the well-established role of diet in diabetes management, many patients in Kogi State struggle with poor dietary choices, either due to lack of awareness or economic constraints. High consumption of starchy foods, low vegetable intake, and poor dietary adherence contribute to worsening health outcomes. Limited research has been conducted to analyze the dietary patterns of diabetic patients in Kogi State and their impact on glycemic control. This study aims to assess dietary habits, identify barriers to healthy eating, and suggest interventions for improved diabetes management.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the dietary habits of diabetic patients in Kogi State.

  2. To determine the impact of dietary choices on diabetes management.

  3. To recommend strategies for improving dietary adherence among diabetic patients.

Research Questions

  1. What are the common dietary habits of diabetic patients in Kogi State?

  2. How do these dietary habits affect blood sugar control and overall health?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to improve nutrition among diabetic patients?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Poor dietary habits contribute to poor glycemic control among diabetic patients.

  2. Increased consumption of high-fiber and low-glycemic index foods improves diabetes management.

  3. Nutritional counseling and awareness programs enhance dietary adherence among diabetic patients.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on diabetic patients in Kogi State, examining their dietary habits and health outcomes. Limitations include self-reported dietary intake and individual variations in diabetes management.

Definitions of Terms
